Antithrombin III is a protein made by the liver and is normally present in human plasma. It prevents blood from coagulating, limiting the formation of blood clots. Antithrombin deficiency is a rare genetic disorder that leads to increased risk of venous and arterial thrombosis. Individuals with this deficiency may receive a sterile, nonpyrogenic, stable, lyophilized preparation of purified human antithrombin III in connection with surgical or obstetrical procedures or when they suffer from thromboembolism.
